Throughout my active and progressive career in energy and tech, I've been deeply committed to impacting a world and work life where equality, respect, and diversity prevail. I believe in a work life where advancement is determined by ambition, skills, and a thirst for learning, not just traditional paths. As careers lengthen and the nature of work evolves with AI and innovation, it’s crucial to adapt work styles to fit our evolving needs and commitments.
Embracing the Rise of Portfolio Careers
One of the most positive developments in recent years is the rise of portfolio careers and fractional leadership roles. These options provide the flexibility to contribute to various projects and companies, allowing professionals to make a significant impact across different domains.
Despite this progress, the job market still largely gravitates towards full-time, longitudinal employment. This traditional view, combined with persistent gender and age biases, presents a significant challenge. For instance:
- 64% of women over 40 report experiencing ageism in the workplace (AARP).
- Women are 18% less likely than men to be promoted to senior roles (McKinsey & Co).
Frankly, it is time for change. By challenging traditional views of employment and executive talent as well as embracing flexible career paths, we can build a more inclusive and dynamic workforce. The rise of portfolio careers is a testament to the evolving nature of work. It offers experienced professionals the opportunity to leverage their skills in varied and impactful ways.
My Portfolio Career Journey
At 42, with a wealth of experience as a SaaS and Tech GTM leader, I am actively preparing for a portfolio career. This path allows me to impact the market in diverse ways — scaling companies, contributing as a fractional revenue and operations leader, investing in startups, and serving as a board professional.
This path aligns with my goal of maintaining an exciting work life over the next 30 years, balancing professional and family commitments with pro-bono work and personal fulfilment. By diversifying my career, I can contribute meaningfully while adapting to the changing demands of the modern workplace.
